The most common cause of a toothache is tooth decay. Other causes may be an abscess, gum disease, a cracked tooth, or jaw problems. Sometimes, toothache may be due to sinus infection, viral infection, drug abuse, or vitamin deficiency. Teens and adults may have pain during emerging of wisdom teeth. Teeth may become sensitive to hot or cold or to brushing if the enamel that protects teeth become worn or cracked, or if the gums recede and expose the inner layers of the teeth.

Home Remedies for Toothache
- Tea tree or clove oil: Apply a little tea tree oil or clove oil at the site of pain using cotton swab.
- Cloves: Place a couple of cloves between aching tooth and cheek. Let the cloves soak in mouth’s saliva for some minutes to soften them up. Then gently chew them so that the soothing oils in the cloves are released in the surrounding area of aching tooth. Leave the cloves in place for about 30 minutes.
- Garlic: Place a clove of garlic with a little rock salt on the affected tooth.
- Ginger: Make a paste of ground ginger or ground red pepper (or both) in enough water. Dip a cotton ball in the paste, squeeze out any excess, then apply the cotton directly to the sore tooth. Don’t let the paste touch gums , as it can be very irritating. If it feels too hot, rinse mouth and discontinue use.
- Wheat grass: Chew wheat grass. The juice of wheat grass acts as an excellent mouthwash for tooth decay and cures toothaches.
- Asafoetida and lemon: Mix asafoetida with lemon juice and slightly heat it. Soak a cotton swab in this mixture and place it in the tooth cavity which will relieve pain quickly.
- Camphor: Place a small piece of natural, edible camphor on the affected tooth.
- Herbal tea: Herbal teas made with chamomile or echinacea often can quell mild toothache.
- Ice pack: Wrap an ice pack in a towel and apply it to the outside of mouth for 10 to 15 minutes every hour until pain subsides. The ice will reduce swelling and calm agitated nerve endings in aching tooth.
