Stress is a normal biological reaction to everyday activities. However, when stress becomes a constant factor in everyday life, then the problem needs medical attention. Children can also be stressed from time to time. However, childhood stress is much more dangerous because the level of childhood stress tolerance is not as high as that of adults. Thus, parents need to be cautious when they realize that their children show signs and symptoms of stress. It is important for parents to know some factors leading to childhood stress. Some of these are discussed below.
1. Parental separation/divorce
Parental separation and or divorce are factors that affect children psychologically. Regardless of how civil or cultured the separation/divorce is/was children will still be affected. Thus, it is important for parents to try to sort out their marital problems in order to spare their children the pain.
2. Fewer healthy stress outlets
Many of todayβs children do not know the meaning of a recess. Recesses used to be important avenues for relieving stress but many schools have replaced these recesses with more academic work. This denies children a chance to relieve stress.
3. Adult content and media saturation
With the internet and cable television, it has become easier for people to know what is going on in other parts of the world. Unfortunately, these channels contain images that are very disturbing to children. Because of watching such brutal images and adult content, children end up stressed instead of being informed or educated.
4. Bullying and Teasing
Bullying and teasing, whether online or physical also plays a major role in childhood stress. Thus, parents need to look for telltale signs of such incidents.
5. Lack of enough sleep
Lack of sleep leads to childhood stress. Thus, parents should ensure that children do their homework on time and watch less television in order to have more sleep time.
6. Social pressures
Social pressures such as trying to fit into a social group, low social status, and other social issues also stress children. Thus, it is important for parents to talk to their children often in order to know which challenges they may be facing.
7. Illness and/or Disability
Illness and disability can also lead to stress. Thus, parents should help their children accept their status while at the same time ensuring that children receive the best possible therapy in order to deal with their health and physical challenges.
8. Academic Pressure
Nowadays, whatever is taught in kindergarten is much more advanced than it used to be a decade ago. This has led to faster childhood development. Unfortunately, the minds of these little kids are not well developed to deal with such level of development leading to stress. In addition, too much homework and numerous tests deny children a chance to relax. As a result, these academic pressures lead to childhood stress.
These are some of the factors leading to childhood stress. Unfortunately, other factors contribute or exacerbate childhood stress. What is important is for parents, teachers, and guardians to ensure that they understand children in order to detect even the earliest signs of stress.
