In the fight against obesity and the weight loss campaign, a lot of focus has been placed on calories. Granted, calories are the main culprits because when in excess, your body stores them as fat. However, in overweight person while reducing caloric intake helps, they also need to burn a large percentage of fat in the body to get to that elusive pound. Fat not only gives us extra weight but it is a major cause of variety of lifestyle diseases including heart problems, some forms of cancer and even appendicitis. One type of fat is trans fat found in spreadables like margarine, they are notorious for raising blood cholesterol. Saturated fats found in butter, whole milk, ice cream also raise blood cholesterol level increasing risks of heart disease, colon and prostate cancer. Another type of fat known as olestra is rarely known. Olestra, is not absorbed by the body and can cause diarrhea. Meats, cheeses and other fat free foods are still as dangerous because they lack fiber, in large amounts they are fattening because of their high number of calories. Knowing what fat is and the different types is important, but what is more important is finding different easy ways to burn fat.
Walking
Your body muscles acts as fire that burns fat, the trick is to just use them long or hard enough for them to burn as much fat as possible. One way to do that is by walking, simple right? Walking for just an hour burns 250 calories apart from that, it’s cheap and safe. Walking is also fun, if you are not a fan of sports this is a good way for you to burn calories without physical exertion. Find time in the morning or evening for walking, you can even use this time to unwind and think and you will find an hour to be such a short time. If you cannot find the time then wake up earlier than usual (this would mean sleeping early too) or walk over your lunch break.
Cycling
Then there is cycling, all you need is a bicycle, helmet and you can cycle your way to work. This works better if you can do it with family or with a friend. If you live in the open countryside, cycling can be fun with lots of open space and different sights to see.
Gardening or Washing car
Gardening or washing and waxing a car sound like chores or hobbies but do them long enough (say 50 minutes) for three days a week and you will be burning more calories than the guy walking for an hour once a week.
Social Dancing
Pushing a stroller three days in a week for 30 minutes everyday and social dancing for the same amount of time burns equal amounts of fat. If you are the social kind, dancing will be perfect as you can also meet new people. If you are more reserved and have a baby, then take them for fresh air round the block. These two activities can be done anywhere, in the city or the country and they don’t need a trainer or some extra money of your income to invest in any gear.
Burning fat can be so simple and if we do it long enough we can be healthier and even more comfortable with the way we look. Simple tasks in life can help us physically and mentally and a combination of these activities can bring great results. Find something you enjoy doing, is it cycling or taking your child to the park or even planting herbs or flowers and then capitalise on your hobby. Who said exercise can’t be fun and beneficial?
